After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, Jetstar Asia (3K) has joyfully resumed its direct flights from Singapore to Okinawa, reinstating a vital link between Singapore and one of Japan’s most breathtaking island holiday destinations. This resumption not only marks a significant milestone in the airline’s operations but also places Jetstar Asia at the forefront as the sole carrier providing non-stop services to this stunning location.
I had the privilege of being part of the media team embarking on this exciting journey. Accompanied by my little brother Ken @iken360_, we set out to explore this tropical paradise, often referred to as the “Hawaii of Japan.” Our mission was clear and fascinating: to uncover the secrets of longevity from the wise elders of Ogimi village. Ogimi, renowned for its high number of centenarians, holds insights into a lifestyle that fosters longevity, a topic that has intrigued many across the globe. This trip, facilitated by the collaborative efforts of @JetstarAsia, @visitokinawajapan, and @sgokinawa.go, was not just a travel expedition but a quest to delve into the age-old mysteries of a long and healthy life. Unveiling the four pillars of longevity in Okinawa, Japan!
The Four Pillars of Longevity in Okinawa
#1 Eat Healthily
In Okinawa, the secret to longevity is often attributed to a healthy diet, something I had the pleasure of exploring during my recent trip. The journey through Okinawa’s culinary landscape was an enlightening experience, revealing how the local diet contributes to the islanders’ famed longevity.
Emi no Mise
Here, Ms. Emiko Kinjo, an inspiring lady over 85 years old, graciously shared her culinary secrets with us. She walked us through each ingredient she uses – discussing its color, nutritional value, and taste. Remarkably, most ingredients come straight from her garden, which Ken and I had the opportunity to visit. The sheer variety and the care she puts into her garden left us in awe. A vital tip for travelers: from 1 November 2019, dining at Emi no Mise requires a reservation made at least a day in advance. Her menu also thoughtfully includes vegetarian options without alliums and bonito.
Ryuness Vegan & Gluten Free Restaurant
This charming little eatery is a gem in the bustling Kokusai shopping street. Their expertise in transforming plant-based ingredients into vegan and gluten-free dishes that replicate meat and seafood is remarkable. The aloe vera-based sashimi was a fascinating and delightful experience. Plus, the restaurant features a corner filled with books, perfect for enriching your wisdom and knowledge while awaiting your meal.
Kariyushi Hotel Dinner
Our stay at the Kariyushi Hotel was made even more memorable by their accommodating service. Upon our request for a vegetarian meal, the hotel surprised us with an exquisite bento, thoughtfully prepared without alliums. This delightful experience at the hotel makes us hopeful that such dishes might become a regular feature on their official menu.
Purple Sweet Potatoes
A must-try in Okinawa is the famed Okinawan sweet potato, with its unique creamy beige skin and vibrant purple interior. These sweet potatoes are not just visually striking but also deliciously creamy and sweet, with a hint of honey. Learning about their origins and nutritional benefits was a revelation – they truly are a superfood.
Pumpkin Manju from Okinawa Kouri Island (Kouri Ocean Tower)
Our visit to Kouri Ocean Tower led to a delightful discovery – the Pumpkin Manju. Upon descending from the tower, a store offered us a sample, and it was love at first bite. Resembling a mooncake but softer and less sweet, this treat became an instant favorite.

#2 Exercise Healthily
The island of Okinawa is not only a treasure trove of dietary secrets for longevity but also a testament to the importance of physical activity, as I discovered during my interactions with the locals.
Playing Gateball with Ogimi Village Elders
One of the most memorable experiences was playing gateball with the elders of Ogimi village. This sport, which might seem simple at first glance, proved to be a test of strategy, patience, skill, and teamwork. Despite our youthful vigor, we, a group of young adults from the media team, found ourselves outmatched by the village elders, who were averaging 85 years old. Our trainer, the sprightly 91-year-old Mr. Takeshi Onashiro, showcased the depth of skill and experience required in gateball. This engaging activity was a personal highlight for me, demonstrating the benefits of staying active at any age.
Gardening with Mr. Kansei Arashiro
Another inspiring encounter was with Mr. Kansei Arashiro, aged 86, who dedicates his time to growing his own vegetables. His daily routine involves working in his organic garden, taking a siesta, and then returning to his farming activities in the evening. Mr. Arashiro’s dedication to his garden is not just a pastime but his secret to maintaining health and vitality. This practice of staying active through gardening was an eye-opener, illustrating how integrating physical activity into daily life can contribute significantly to one’s well-being.
Engagement with Ogimi Village Elders
Interacting with the elders of Ogimi village was undeniably one of the highlights for both Ken and me. Their lifestyle, which seamlessly blends physical activity into daily routines, offers invaluable lessons in maintaining health and longevity. Whether it was through sports like gateball or the more tranquil activity of gardening, these elders exemplified a lifestyle where exercise is a natural and enjoyable part of everyday life.
#3 Engage in Enjoyable Activities
Okinawa, with its rich culture and stunning natural beauty, offers a myriad of activities that cater to diverse interests. During our visit, we immersed ourselves in some of the island’s most captivating experiences, which I highly recommend to anyone traveling there.
Artistic Endeavors at the Ryuku Glass Village
For those with a flair for creativity, the Ryuku Glass Village is a must-visit. Here, you can engage in the art of making Ryuku glass, a traditional Okinawan craft. The process of shaping and coloring these unique glass pieces was not just an artistic endeavor but also a therapeutic experience. Creating something beautiful in such a serene environment was a reminder of the joy found in simple, creative pursuits.
Relaxing at the “Santorini” of Okinawa, the Umikaji Terrace
Often referred to as the “Santorini” of Okinawa, the Umikaji Terrace is a perfect spot to unwind. Ken and I enjoyed our time at one of the trending hammock cafes, where we sipped on drinks and snacked while soaking in the breathtaking ocean views and watching planes land. The blend of relaxation and scenic beauty at this spot makes it an ideal place to chill with friends or simply enjoy some alone time.
Exploring Kokusai Shopping Street
For a more lively experience, a stroll through Kokusai-dori in Naha is highly recommended. Stretching 1.6 kilometers through the city center, this vibrant street is a hub of activity. From sightseeing and shopping to dining and entertainment, Kokusai-dori has something for everyone. Ken and I walked up and down the street several times, absorbing the lively atmosphere. It was not just enjoyable but also a great way to get some exercise while exploring the heart of Naha.
These activities highlighted the diversity of Okinawa, where every visitor can find something that resonates with their interests, whether it be in the realms of art, relaxation, or urban exploration.
#4 Connect with Nature
Okinawa is not just about its vibrant culture and delicious cuisine; it’s also a place where nature’s beauty is on full display. During our visit, we explored some of the most breathtaking natural sites that Okinawa has to offer.
Cape Manzamo
This location is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience Okinawa’s natural beauty. Cape Manzamo is renowned for its stunning ocean views and unique rock formations, including a cliff that resembles an elephant. The serene ambiance of this place provides a perfect setting to relax and unwind, allowing one to connect with nature and calm the mind. Standing atop the cliff and gazing out at the vast ocean, I was reminded of the profound beauty and tranquility that nature offers.
Gyokusendo Cave in Okinawa World
Another natural wonder that should be on every visitor’s list is the Gyokusendo Cave, located within Okinawa World. This magnificent cave is not just a testament to nature’s artistry but also a significant geological marvel. As the largest cave on Okinawa and the second-largest cave system in Japan, after Akiyoshido, Gyokusendo offers an awe-inspiring experience. Formed over 300,000 years, the cave extends for about 5 kilometers, with approximately 1 kilometer accessible to the public. Walking through this ancient cave, with its stunning stalactites and stalagmites, is like stepping into another world. The intricate formations and the subtle play of light within the cave create an ambiance that is both mystical and serene. It’s a place where the passage of time and the beauty of nature converge, offering a truly unforgettable experience.
Busena Marine Park
For ocean enthusiasts who prefer to stay dry, Busena Marine Park is an ideal destination. Here, you can walk along a pier that extends deep into the ocean, offering a unique opportunity to observe marine life in their natural habitat. The experience of watching the fish and other sea creatures from the comfort of the pier is both fascinating and peaceful, allowing for a leisurely exploration of the underwater world.
Kouri Islands
A visit to Kouri Island reveals more of Okinawa’s natural wonders. The island is famous for its natural “love rock” formations, which are as romantic as they are picturesque. Additionally, the Kouri Ocean Tower offers panoramic views of the island’s stunning landscapes. And, of course, a visit to Kouri Island wouldn’t be complete without trying the delicious pumpkin manju, a delightful treat that perfectly complements the island’s charm.
These natural attractions in Okinawa not only provided a feast for the eyes but also brought a sense of peace and connection to the environment. They are a reminder of the importance of preserving such natural beauty for future generations to enjoy.
Conclusion
Okinawa stands as a distinct gem within Japan, setting itself apart from the urban allure of Tokyo, the cultural richness of Kyoto, the bustling energy of Osaka, and the scenic beauty of Hokkaido. Its unique charm lies in its laid-back vibe and the wisdom of its elders, who embody the art of longevity. This subtropical paradise, just a five-hour flight from Singapore, is an ideal destination for a weekend getaway or a longer retreat. For those planning a visit, renting a car is advisable to fully explore the island’s diverse landscapes and hidden treasures.
